If you’re using Oracle Java, then you should consider your organization as being in an audit scenario now. Oracle knows when and what version of Oracle Java you have downloaded and therefore what their Oracle customers have. Companies using Java without the correct licensing are at risk of facing significant penalties if they are found to be out of compliance.
The January 2023 , Oracle released significant changes to its pricing model for Java, Oracle Java SE Universal Subscription Global Price List. This introduced the notion that customers may soon need to license Oracle Java by every single employee within the business. This is likely to cause significant cost increases to businesses. Cost Under the New Licensing Model (USD)
Do you currently have an active OTN subscription covering v7, v8, v11-16?
No – then you will be required to adopt the new employee count Java subscription. Oracle can see when you download Java and it’s only a matter of time before the auditors arrive. Yes – You may be able to use the terms and conditions of your current agreement to your advantage, as long as you are complaint with your license position. Are you 100% confident that you have complete visibility of your Java installations including accurate installation data?

Yes – The licensing changes brought in on 23rd January 2023 and March 1st will have changed the way in which you need to manage Oracle Java. Note: All usage of Open JDK (including Oracle) does not require a paid subscription as they are covered under a General Public License (GNU). Some older versions of Oracle Java are also unaffected. It is also worth noting if you patch older Java with a new security update you will also require a license
Are you 100% aware of which third-party apps you deploy that are using Oracle Java and where you are required to provide the license?
Yes – You’ll need constant vigilance and the right technology solution to keep on top of licensing changes. For example, Oracle and VMWare cancelled their agreement on November 4th, 2022, making customers responsible for licensing the Oracle Java used within VMWare software – totally out of customer’s control.
