The challenge
Skagit Regional Health supports thousands of users, from clinicians to administrators, each group with its own hardware and software requirements and more than 5,500 devices between them. Three things held governance back:
- Complex vendor compliance and licence optimisation
- Manual processes slowing visibility and governance
- Limited insight into patching and security vulnerabilities
The Project Management Office Lead set out a new IT governance strategy. It depended on a software asset management platform that could give fundamental visibility and observability of the IT infrastructure, automate the work behind it, support the move to cloud, and hold everything the organisation owned in one view. That requirement went out to a competitive RFP, and Certero won it.
What went in
CerteroX ITAM and CerteroX SAM, end to end: discovery that makes sense of hardware and software, and application management across every operating system in use — Windows, Mac, Unix and Linux.
Automation took over the manual work. Licensing specialists now do in a few clicks what had taken several teams to assemble by hand. Cloud provisioning meant deployment was quick and value arrived early rather than after a year of configuration.
Within months, a complete Effective Licence Position (ELP) was delivered, along with on-site training. The training turned out to matter as much as the ELP: it surfaced capabilities the team had not budgeted for, including real-time hardware inventory automation and a stronger governance and security posture.

What came of it
The project ended up wider than its original scope. Broader visibility and tighter control over the organisation’s IT assets let the team manage patching proactively instead of chasing it, strengthen cybersecurity on evidence rather than assumption, and accelerate the move to cloud with a clear picture of what was being moved.
