What is geo-fencing? How can it protect your mobile devices?

The mobile devices in your enterprise, both corporate owned and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), will in all likelihood now contain a wealth of sensitive corporate data. So, it is now more important than ever to ensure that this data remains safe and secure. One way in which this can be done is through the process of geo-fencing which gives an additional layer of security to organizations.

What is Geo-fencing?

Geo-fencing software allows administrators to set virtual boundaries on mobile devices in a specific physical area. Designated areas can be defined in two ways:

  • Drawing a circle over the location
  • Specifying the latitude, longitude and radius of the location

Geo-fencing uses GPS, which is now commonly available on most mobile devices, to track the device location through GPS directly, or Wi-Fi. If a device is found to be outside of a geo-fenced location an alert can be sent straight to the administrator or other designated individuals.

Geo-fencing can be used as part of a data loss prevention strategy. When an administrator receives an alert if a device leaves its geo-fenced location it can automatically be wiped, blocked or unenrolled from the corporate network – controlling the security risk associated with mobile devices.

How does Geo-fencing Help your Organization?

Mobile assets are a costly investment for many companies and the sensitive corporate data on them a potential risk. Geo-fencing can act as a deterrent and a tool to help aid in the recovery of lost or stolen devices.

For example: A healthcare organization which use mobile devices such as iPads within wards can ensure patient data remains safe and secure. If a device leaves the ward all corporate data can be wiped automatically from the device.

Geo-fencing can give you confidence that your company data is safe and secure at all times.
